Can a hippy sista pole dance?

It’s a reasonable question that deserves a logical response, and it was the very same question I asked myself the day my girlfriend Tira asked me to join her in a class.  I thought to myself, “You must be kidding.  My behind is too big to swing on a pole.”  But I also thought, “What the heck?  What do I have to lose?”  Little did I know, pole dancing would change my entire outlook on exercising, strength-training, conditioning, and endurance.

I had to admit that I was a bit apprehensive, but after the first class, I was totally hooked.  I’ve spent years trying to lose weight, and while I finally found a trainer and a program that seemed to work, I quickly tired of the same humdrum routine of weight training and body sculpting.  I needed a change and I needed one fast, because I felt myself falling back into some of the habits that made me a chunky girl to begin with.  Pole Dancing, excuse me, POLE FITNESS was it.

My apprehension quickly waned after the first class.  Then after a few more classes I realized that everyone in the class was a real woman.  Women just like me.  Women who exercise for a purpose.  Hippy sistas, slim sista, tall sistas, short sistas, black sistas and white sistas.  All of us are on a mission.  A mission to improve our health and well being, but though sophisticated and entertaining means.

Needless to say, I had to do a bit of research.  Something this fun couldn’t be good for you, could it?  Well, a one hour work out for a 150 lbs person can burn as much as 500 calories in that hour.  Yes, 500 calories.  That meant I could burn off my breakfast before I ate lunch.  But then the real test happened.  In just 3 short months, my co-workers started commenting on my appearance.  I was always a good dresser, but now I actually LOOKED GOOD in my good clothes.  I noticed definition in my arms and legs.   I noticed a curve in my waist and hips.  I noticed men on the street stopping and looking.  I love the “Hey sista, you look good today!” statements.  I just can’t get enough.

Who knew that learning to climb a pole would increase my strength and a generic scoop move would increase my endurance?  Who knew that a “flower” or a “vampire” would increase my flexibility and agility?  Who knew that I could have fun and gain confidence all from swinging on a pole?  Well, this is my testimony to all the hippy sistas out there.  It can be done.  I did it and there’s no stopping me now.
Don’t get me wrong.  It’s hard work.  You will sweat, you will bruise, and you will be sore, but you’ll walk out of class knowing you accomplished something real and measurable.  And guess what, while we’re not professionals, we can actually do moves that make us feel and look sexy.  It was awkward at first, but I now walk with a confidence and sensuality that I can only attribute to my time at House of Poles.

So I must tip my hat to my pole dancing (fitness) family.  To them I say thank you.  Thank you Lanice and Renee for having the courage and wisdom to bring such a progressive movement to a sleepy, conservative town.  Thank you Stacy and Christine for being patient and encouraging.  You make us believe we can do it even though we probably suck at it the first couple of times.  Thank you Tira for the suggestion and thank you Tira, NiQue, Autumn, Nicole and Cassandra.  Together we swing, we sweat, we hurt, but we look damn good.

So the answer to the question, “Can a hippy sista pole dance?”  The answer is very simple.  HECK YEAH! And quite well I might add.
